Writing + Research
My writing practice includes scholarly research in theatre and performance, educational and interpretive public writing on art and artists, performance criticism, and a variety of creative forms, always in dialogue with live performance. My research is broadly engaged with the practices, processes, and disciplinary formations of modern and contemporary performance, with particular focuses on the relationship between talk and text, the interdisciplinary Avant-garde, and the history and institutional dynamics of theatre and performance in Chicago.
My scholarly work includes my doctoral project, “Talk Performance: Extemporaneous Speech, Artistic Discipline, and Media in the Post-1960s American Avant-garde”, as well as related articles in The Journal of American Theatre and Drama, Performance Research, and Ransom Center Magazine.
My criticism has appeared in Theatre Journal, Theatre Research International, Studies in Theatre and Performance, and other public-facing venues.
I have written about performance for a number of Chicago arts institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, and the Shakespeare 400 Festival.
Publications related to my own creative practice include an article co-authored with Chloe Johnston, and performance documentation published by the Block Museum of Art.
