Ashland 9 Extraction0:00
Extractions is a series of mediated text and voice performance works exploring the impact of form and context on written and spoken language. The series includes Porch Extraction (Sound Outside, Ox-Bow School of Arts, Saugatuck, MI, 2008), Ashland 9 Extraction (Text Off the Page, Sullivan Galleries, Chicago, 2008; Requited Journal, 2012), Extraction: Intelligentsia (Synesthetic Plan of Chicago, Chicago Cultural Center, 2009), and text-based installations Round Trip Extraction: No. 52 (Exhibition 3.12052009, MVSEVM Gallery, Chicago, 2009) and Hummingbird Extraction, a collaboration with photgrapher Sarah Best (Artifice/Artifact, Cobalt Studio, Chicago, 2011).
Extractions takes physical presence, subjectivity, and memory as initial recording devices – I harvest mostly overheard language from a particular environment by means of live, fragmented, and fundamentally imperfect transcription. I then edit the texts into virtual, largely subjective and fictional, language maps of the original spatial and temporal experience. Extractions exists variously as sound works performed and recorded in single-voiced readings and usually exhibited in gallery or installation contexts, or made available online, and as textual scores, which have been published and exhibited as text-based installation.
